Vitamin and Mineral supplements are a booming industry. The theory of their popularity goes something like this: the typical American diet doesn’t fulfill all of our basic nutritional requirements, and therefore we should be “supplementing” our diets with lab-constructed pills full of vitamins and minerals to ensure we are healthy.
However, there are multiple problems with this line of reasoning. The first being, if your diet is so unhealthy that you believe you aren’t even getting the most basic levels of nutrients every day, what on Earth are you doing? Why even subscribe to such a diet in the first place?
There is a bigger issue here, though, and it’s one of biology. Quite simply, vitamin supplements are worthless primarily because they are unnatural. Our bodies have no idea what to do with these oblong conglomerations of chemically-constructed “lab nutrition” we call a pill. These processed products that we buy in supermarkets were never meant to be digested. If you think there’s value in a dry brick of chemically manifested vitamins and minerals packed together, devoid of all of the natural substances that make these nutrients valuable to us, you are sorely misinformed. The truth is, most mainstream vitamin supplements are just not going to do anything for you.
Real nutrition begins and ends with natural, organic substances: and specifically for us, fruits and vegetables. Not bleached rice, not cow’s milk fortified with Vitamin D, not soda or even some “healthy meal” you find in the frozen dinner section. We are frugivorous animals that are biologically designed to derive the majority of our nutrients from fresh, living fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Anything to the contrary isn’t nutrition, it’s a belief system.
The mainstream vitamin and mineral supplement companies rely on the general public being completely unaware of how human biology actually works. Their entire business model hinges on you remaining ignorant of your own digestive system and how it functions. Many food companies rely on this very same thing. There’s so many products out there, even meats, cheeses, and other seriously unhealthy substances, that claim to be “healthy” when our bodies scarcely recognize these products as food.
To be clear: just because you can put something in your mouth and digest it doesn’t mean it is food. You can take a sheet of paper, cut it up into bits, eat it, digest it, and you’ll be fine. Does that mean paper is food? I didn’t think so. The same can be said for many of these other substances, which, while at least providing menial nutrition in the form of carbs, protein, and fats, they give little else. We often look at eating as just a calories and protein game, but there’s so much more than that. The vitamin and mineral compounds are what our bodies use to build themselves with. If you are feeding your cells second-rate nutrients, you’re going to have second-rate health.

This is the difference between real holistic nutrition and the fad nutrition of the dietary supplement industry, and why it’s beginning to get exposed. We supposedly have access to the greatest medical marvels the world has ever known, popular diets that “work” are everywhere, and there are entire sections of local supermarkets dedicated to vitamin supplements, so why are millions and millions of people dying every year from preventable diseases and degenerative health conditions?
The answer is that the mainstream idea of “health” is mostly a fraud.

Regardless of the misleading claims vitamin supplements make, there are actually a few on the market that work better than others, though they aren’t nearly as popular. These are plant-based vitamins made completely out of organic vegetable matter. While they are still not as effective as eating a good diet full of diverse fruits and vegetables, their nutrient content is more natural and able to be better absorbed by the body.

Invest in your health and it will pay off.
